Here are a few tips to keep your dog cool and hydrated this summer.
Always Have Water on Hand
Whether you’re going for a casual walk or spending the day at the beach, make sure you bring water with you if you have your pup to keep them hydrated. It’s easy for dogs to get dehydrated when it’s hot outside, especially when exercise is involved. If it’s really hot, consider bringing along a wet towel or cooling pad. This cools down their bellies and armpits, helping them regulate their temperature.
Give Them Frozen Treats
We give kids frozen treats like popsicles to keep them cool during the summer, and you can do the same for your dog! At Just Raw, we offer a number of Raw Meaty Bones, which come frozen. These are the perfect cooling treats to feed your pet to keep them refreshed.
Look for Shade
If you’re spending the day outside with your dog, make sure that you’re giving them a chance to hang out in the shade. Just like humans, getting out from under the hot sun will help them cool down and prevent them from getting heatstroke or getting dehydrated.
Consider the Timing
Certain times of the day are hotter than others. Morning and evenings are typically cooler as the sun isn’t as high in the sky. If you want to take your dog on a hike or go to the park for a ball trip, consider doing it earlier or later in the day. The afternoon is the hottest part of the day, and your dog won’t be able to be outside for as long. If you do have to go out when it’s at its hottest, make sure you have water on hand. You can also bring along a spray bottle to mist them to keep them cool.
Learn the Signs
Before you and your dog jump into summer activities, take some time to learn about the signs of heatstroke and dehydration. You can even ask your vet the next time you visit them. In addition to learning the signs of these conditions, also learn how to treat them! Many people think tossing their dog into cool water or giving them lots of water is the best way to handle dehydration or heat stroke, but these can actually harm them. If you think your dog is too hot, give them water slowly so they don’t vomit it up, and cool them down gently by placing water on their belly and pads of their feet.

Having a dog that’s a picky eater doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a major concern, but it can make mealtimes stressful. Here are a few tips to help entice your picky pup to chow down!
Tip 1: Figure Out the Cause
The best way to help a picky dog is to figure out what’s causing it. The first step should be ruling out anything serious. If your dog used to be a good eater but suddenly stopped, it could be a sign of something medically wrong, in which case you should consult your vet.
A poor appetite could also be a sign of dental issues. If your dog avoids chewing on bones or other toys, a cracked or infected tooth could be the cause. Food allergies are also another big reason your dog may not get excited to eat. They aren’t always easy to spot but look for skin irritation or loose stool.
Tip 2: Stick to a Schedule
While picky eating can be due to health-related issues, it can also be behavioral. There are a few tricks pet owners can use to train their dogs to eat better. One is to set and stick to a strict feeding schedule. Set a finite window in which your dog can eat. This teaches dogs that their meals will only be offered at a certain time.
Free feeding might work for other dogs or pets, but it’s not effective for picky eaters. Give your dog around 20-30 minutes to eat their meal, and then take away any uneaten food. This will help teach your dog that when food is offered, it’s time to eat. Also, try to minimize treats, as this prevents your pup from filling up on them so that they’re more likely to eat their real meal.
Tip 3: Switch it Up
Ever eat the same meal so many times that you get sick of it? That can happen to dogs too! It’s possible that your pooch has gotten bored of their food and just isn’t find their meals that interesting or enticing anymore.
A good way to combat this is to introduce a rotational diet with multiple different meal options. At Just Raw, we offer a number of combo packs with a variety of protein options that are perfect for a rotational meal plan. Having something different will make mealtime more exciting for your dog.
Tip 4: Add some Toppings
If your dog’s stomach can’t handle the change that comes with a rotational diet or they have food allergies, consider just adding some fun and tasty toppings. There are tons of dog-friendly ingredients that you can add to their meal that will make it more appealing to them and boost their health.
Some toppings that our Just Raw clients often use include quail eggs, carrots, Just Raw dehydrated treats, blueberries, parsley, and more. Feel free to check out our lists of dog-friendly fruit, vegetables, and herbs for some ideas!
Tip 5: Think About the Environment
Picky eating isn’t always about the food. Sometimes it can be about the environment where meals are served. Stress and anxiety can be causes for picky eating in dogs, while other dogs are super sensitive to activity around them when they eat.
Try feeding your dog in a quiet, calm space where distractions are limited. You can even try feeding them in their crate so that they feel extra safe. Doing this will help your dog feel comfortable so that they can focus on their food.

What is Tripe?
One of the most common questions we get asked is, what exactly is tripe? Green tripe is the untreated contents of a grazing animal’s stomach or intestines. At Just Raw, we use beef tripe, but green tripe can also come from sheep or deer. Tripe is perfectly safe for dogs to eat and was a part of their ancestral diets. Dogs were hunters before domestication and often consumed their prey’s stomach and entrails. Green tripe is one of the most common sources of essential vitamins and nutrients for carnivores.
Prepare your Nose
Consider this your warning- green tripe smells! As you can imagine, the untreated, raw intestine of an animal has quite a strong scent. The pungent smell will hit you the moment you open the container, so be prepared. We recommend only using a small amount as a topping and cleaning it up immediately after your dog is done eating. This will help reduce the stench. Your dog will love the smell, though!
It’s Packed with Nutrients
Green beef tripe is packed with nutrients that will help boost your pet’s health. It’s high in protein and amino acids that will help build muscle and repair tissue. Tripe is also loaded with digestive enzymes and probiotics that will improve your dog’s gut flora and improve their digestive system. Even adding a little bit of green tripe to your dog’s raw meals will help!
Not Suitable for All Ages
Tripe is a great addition to a dog’s diet, but it’s not suitable for all dogs. It’s not recommended for dogs under six months, as it can be too strong for their young stomachs. It’s generally fine to introduce tripe to dogs six months and older, though. You can always check with your vet beforehand. Introduce it slowly in small quantities to help your dog adjust.
Want to see the benefits of feeding your dog green beef tripe? Order it today! It’s the perfect topping for any raw meal and will boost your dog’s overall health. Contact us if you have any questions.

Herbs and spices are what make food a meal. What person doesn’t love a well-seasoned dish? It turns out that dogs love it too! Many pet owners are surprised to learn that their favorite herbs and spices can actually have health benefits for their dogs. Some are toxic to dogs, but here are some safe herbs you can sprinkle over your dog’s next raw meal for some added flavor and nutrients!
Oregano
Oregano is most commonly associated with pizza and pasta, but this herb is high in antioxidants and flavonoids. This non-toxic herb has been used to help with digestive issues in humans and dogs, helping reduce diarrhea and gas.
Rosemary
Rosemary is a great herb to introduce to your pup. It’s high in iron, calcium, and vitamin B6. It’s also been shown to act as an antioxidant, reducing the risk of cancer and heart disease. Rosemary is also a natural flea repellant!
Peppermint
Peppermint has been used throughout history to help soothe upset stomachs, reduce gas, reduce nausea, and help with motion sickness. If your dog has any digestive issues, try introducing some peppermint to their diet to see if it helps.
Parsley
Parsley is often used as a garnish for human meals, but this herb is full of flavonoids, antioxidants, and vitamins. This spice is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and can product against UTIs and kidney stones. This herb has so many health benefits for dogs, which is why we include it in all of our Just Raw meals!
Basil
Did you know basil is a dog-approved herb? Basil has antioxidant, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties, which help reduce the risk of cancer and diabetes. Adding some basil to your dog’s diet can also help reduce pain and inflammation in dogs with arthritis.
Cinnamon
Don’t try to cinnamon challenge with your dog but adding a sprinkle of this spice to your dog’s diets can help them regulate their blood sugar and lower insulin resistance. It is also anti-inflammatory, protects against heart disease, and combats free radicals.
Coriander
Coriander, also known as cilantro, is another great herb that can help with digestive issues. It’s been known to alleviate nausea, reduce diarrhea, ease gas, and help detoxify the body. Coriander is also rich in vitamin A, C, potassium, zinc, and other essential minerals. Avoid giving cilantro to pregnant animals, though, as it can stimulate contractions.
Ginger
You may be surprised to learn that ginger is safe for dogs to eat in small doses! It contains many antioxidants that ease nausea, boost cognitive function, regulate blood sugar, and reduce gastrointestinal problems. Ginger is also anti-inflammatory and can help dogs with arthritis.
Final Thoughts
As with any new food, you should always introduce herbs and spices to your dog’s diet slowly. Always give small doses as well, as many of these herbs can have side effects if ingested in large quantities. If your dog has any medical or health issues, please check with your vet before adding anything new to your dog’s diet.
Sprinkle these herbs and spices on top of your dog’s raw food for a tasty and healthy treat! Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
]]>Allergy Fighter
A lot of dogs suffer from allergies, and unfortunately, it’s not always easy to treat them or find out the source. That’s where apples can come in. Apples are one of nature’s greatest allergy fighters. They’re an excellent source of quercetin, a flavonoid that helps fight off the harmful effects of allergies. Quercetin a natural antihistamine that helps reduce irritation, redness, and inflammation. So, if your pup is fighting itchy skin, consider adding some apples to their diet!
Source of Vitamins A and C
Vitamins are just as important to keep your dog healthy as they are in keeping us healthy. Damaged cells, known as free radicals, can build up in your dog’s body, leading to chronic diseases and issues. Apples are a great source of vitamins A and C, which help protect your dog from damaged cells and reduce the risk of long-term health issues.
Improve Gut Health
The fiber in apples will aid in your dog’s digestion. About 50% of the fiber in apples comes from pectin, which is a starch found in the cell walls of fruits and veggies. Pectin plays a valuable role as a prebiotic food, which helps feed the probiotics in your dog’s gut. Probiotics are good bacteria that help keep your dog’s digestive system balanced.
Things to Keep in Mind When Feeding Dog’s Apples
While apples have a ton of health benefits for dogs, there are still some things you should keep in mind. Feeding too much of any fruit or vegetable can throw off your dog’s digestion and cause vomiting or diarrhea. That’s why we only include a small percentage of fruit in our raw meals.
Not all parts of apples are suitable for consumption for dogs either. Apple seeds contain cyanide which is poisonous for dogs. Apple cores and stems should also be kept away from dogs as they can easily become a choking hazard. Also, be sure to thoroughly wash your apples before feeding your dog, as they are often coating in pesticides and wax to protect them during transportation.
If you want to learn more about the benefits of raw feeding and introducing apples to your dog’s diet, feel free to contact us! Be sure to check out our tasty Just Raw Meals, which all feature apples and other ingredients to provide your dog with a healthy and nutritious meal.

Research & Pick the Right Raw Food
Before you jump into raw feeding, make sure you do some research to ensure you’re selecting the best raw food for your dog. It’s important to find a raw food that has a nutritional mix and uses high-quality ingredients, like Just Raw Pet Food! At Just Raw, our raw meals are made using a mix of protein, bones, organs, and fruits and vegetables, mimicking the natural diet dogs were designed to live on. All of our protein is human-grade, hormone-free, and locally sourced here in Canada!
Get Portions Right
Portion size is important when feeding, especially raw. When feeding raw, a general rule of thumb is to feed your dog 2-3% of their adult body weight. For puppies, this means feeding them 2-3% of what their ideal and expected adult weight is. Start with this, and then adjust based on your pup’s weight. Consult your vet on what your dog’s ideal weight should be, but generally, you should be able to feel but not see their ribs.
Cut Kibble Completely
A common mistake pet owners make when switching their dogs to a raw diet is to mix kibble and raw food. This isn’t recommended as dogs digest traditional kibble and raw food at different rates, which could cause digestive issues for your dog.
Pay Attention to Health & Hygiene
When feeding raw dog food, it’s incredibly important that you pay attention to cleaning. Raw meals should always be stored frozen and thawed in the refrigerator. Feed your dog the appropriate portion, and be sure to remove any unconsumed food within 20 minutes. Food left out can breed bacteria and cause your dog to get sick. Also, be sure to wash your dog’s bowl with warm soapy water after each feeding. This should keep this safe and healthy!

The study surveyed Canadian dog owners, taking a poll on which breeds were most popular by location. Only purebred dog data was collected, meaning mutts or designer breeds such as doodles were left out.
It’s no surprise that Labrador Retrievers were the most popular breed overall. This has been the top breed in Canada for years. The survey found that 12% of all Canadian dog owners have a Lab. Labs have been the most popular breed in Canada for over 20 years, which isn’t too surprising considering the breed is actually Canadian!
Here is what the most popular breed for each province was:
Golden Retrievers came out on top in British Columbia, with 11% of respondents having a dog of this breed. Goldens are actually the third most popular breed overall in the country and are one of the most common breeds in all of North America.
Alberta
Albert followed the overall trend of Canada, with Labs being the most popular breed in this province. 10% of respondents in Alberta said they owned a Lab.
Saskatchewan
Labrador Retrievers are also popular in Saskatchewan! 15% of residents here survey said they have a Lab.
Manitoba
Manitoba also loves its Labs, with 14% of respondents stating they have one. Not surprising, considering how loveable Labs are!
Ontario
Labradors are also loved in Ontario, with 14% of those surveyed having one. Whether they live in the city, suburbs, or rural Ontario, Labs are well suited, which is why they’re so popular.
Quebec
Quebec also loves its big dogs, but this province favored German Shepherds. 14% of respondents in Quebec have this breed.
Newfoundland and Labrador
Although Canada’s most popular breed is named for this region, Labrador Retrievers aren’t actually the most popular dog breed in this province. German Shepherds were surveyed to be the most popular, with 10% reporting they have one.
Prince Edward Island
P.E.I actually had a tie when it came to the most popular breed and is the only province to include a smaller breed! 22% of pet owners surveyed in Prince Edward Island have a Shih Tzu and/or a Labrador Retriever.
New Brunswick
New Brunswick followed the trend of the rest of Canada, with Labrador Retrievers being the number one breed. 14% of respondents have one.
Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia is also a fan of Labrador Retrievers, with 17% of those surveyed reporting they have one.
Final Thoughts
Overall, it appears Canadian’s favor large dog breeds, with 42% of dog owners having a larger breed. Canadians seem to find them more versatile, and most of the most popular large breeds make for great family dogs.
Although large breeds dominated in terms of popularity by province, some small breeds also reigned supreme. Surprisingly, chihuahua’s won over the hearts of Canadian’s that preferred small breeds, with 16% of those surveyed having one as a companion.

It’s officially Spring, which means flowers are starting to bloom! As pretty as fresh florals can be, pet owners should be careful about which ones they let their pets sniff. Many common flowers can actually be pretty toxic to cats and dogs. Here are some flowers that are toxic to pets to keep an eye out for!
Lilies
There are several species of lilies that are poisonous to both cats and dogs. Some species such as Peace, Peruvian, and Calla have oxalate crystals in them, which cause irritation in the mouth, tongue, and throat. Other species such as Asiatic, Day, Easter, and Tiger are even more toxic and can result in kidney failure.
This sunny flower is common in the springtime, but they’re not great for your pets. Daffodils contain strong alkaline substances that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and even cardiac arrhythmia.
Fun fact: Did you know that in ancient times, some communities would feed their enemies honey from bees who frequented azalea and rhododendron plants as it caused confusion and vomiting? It turns out it’s not so great for pets either! Ingesting these flowers can cause vomiting or your pet to go into toxic shock.
Tulips are one of the most popular flowers in the world, but they’re also incredibly toxic. The bulbs of tulips contain Tulipalin A & B, which can cause intense vomiting, depression, diarrhea, hypersalivation, drooling, and lack of appetite. So keep an eye out for them!
These flowers are more common during the winter months as they’re a common Christmas decoration, but they’re not very merry when ingested. The white milky sap in poinsettia leaves are the toxic parts, and eating it can cause vomiting and drooling.
These colorful flowers contain cyanogenic glycosides in their leaves and flowers. When ingested by cats and dogs, this can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy/depression. Like all toxic plants, if your pet ingests these flowers and starts showing symptoms contact emergency vet services immediately.
These vibrant flowers are pretty to look at, but make sure your pet doesn’t eat them! There are two types of crocuses, spring crocuses which can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and late blooming crocuses which are much worse. These can prompt renal failure, even in humans!
These purple planets are pretty toxic for pets when ingested! They contain cardiac glycosides, which affect the heart. All parts of this plant are considered toxic, including the water in the vase. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, abnormal heart rate, cardiac arrhythmias, weakness, tremors, seizures, cardiac failure, and even death.
Fresh flowers are always great, whether they’re in a pretty vase at home or blooming outside. Pet owners need to always keep an eye on their cats and dogs when around flowers and plants. Never let them ingest anything without knowing if it is safe or not. If you believed your pet has ingested something toxic, contact your vet immediately and keep a close eye on them!

Here is our guide to all the pros and cons of the most popular dog food bowl materials!
Plastic Bowl
Plastic dog bowls are extremely common and a popular choice for new pet parents. They come in tons of colors, sizes, and shapes. They’re also cheaper than other bowl types and don’t break when dropped. Due to being durable and lightweight, plastic bowls are a great option for feeding while traveling. Many pet owners also use plastic bowls when the puppy is young before learning their eating habits and investing in something more long-term.
Cons
Plastic bowls are popular, but they’re considered the worst choice for dogs to eat from, especially if you’re feeding raw. Plastic bowls can scratch easily and are a chewers delight. Unfortunately, these small scratches make it easy for food to get stuck, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria that not even washing will altogether remove. These bacteria build-up can cause issues such as dermatitis. Some dogs are also allergic to plastics, and plastic bowls may contain BPA or other chemicals that can be harmful to your dog.
Ceramic & Stoneware Bowls
Ceramic and stoneware food bowls are a step above plastic. They’re a more stylish option and come in tons of pretty colors and patterns. They’re also non-porous and easy to clean! They are heavier, but this can be a good thing if your dog is prone to pushing their bowl around the room while eating.
Cons
The downside to ceramic and stoneware bowls is that they’re fragile and prone to cracking and chipping. Cracks in bowls provide a place for food to accumulate and encourage bacterial growth. If you see chips or cracks, it’s time to replace the bowl. These bowls also tend to be heavier, which can be challenging if you have to feed your pup on the go.
Stainless Steel
When it comes to dog bowls, stainless steel is king. We recommend all pet owners interested in feeding their dogs a raw diet use only stainless-steel bowls. That’s because they’re non-porous, durable, long-lasting, unbreakable, and extremely easy to clean and sanitize. This is especially important when feeding raw, as an unclean bowl contaminated with raw meat can make your dog sick.
Cons
There aren’t many downsides to stainless steel bowls. They’re not the most stylish and don’t come in as many colors. They are lightweight, which means your dog can accidentally push them around when eating. To avoid this, get one with a non-skid bottom, place it on a mat, or use a bowl stand. Also, be careful when using them outside as the metal can make the water too hot or too cold depending on the temperature.
Final Thoughts
Material matters when it comes to your dog’s food bowl. We highly recommend using a stainless steel bowl to keep everything clean and sanitized for dog-owners that are raw feeding. No matter what bowl material you choose, though, it’s important that you clean them regularly to avoid bacterial build-up. Your dog deserves a clean bowl to eat and drink out of.

The short answer is: it depends.
Here’s what you need to know before putting your dog on a vegan diet.
Dogs are Omnivores
There’s been some debate about whether dogs are omnivores or carnivores, but dogs have several omnivores’ key qualities. This includes molars with flat surfaces, the ability to digest most carbohydrates, small intestine size consistent with other omnivores, and more. This all means that dogs can get essential nutrients from plants and animal proteins, which is why we include a mix of protein and fruits/veggies in our Just Raw Meals.
Vet Recommended Vegans
Due to dogs being omnivores, it means that they can eat a completely vegan diet. HOWEVER, in order to do so safely, it needs to be done under the careful guidance of a veterinarian and monitored closely. Due to how difficult it can be to provide a dog with a balanced and nutritional vegan meal, most vets do not recommend doing so unless there are medical reasons.
Reasons for Veganism
While humans adopt a vegan diet for a number of reasons, from environmental impact to health benefits, most dogs are put on it for medical reasons. Food allergies are the top reasons why a vet may recommend a vegan diet. Some dogs are sensitive to specific animal proteins, and eliminating them can help. Again though, this should only be done under the recommendation of a vet and pet nutritionist.
Problems with Dog Vegan Diets
Dogs can live on vegan diets, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they should unless it’s medically necessary. There is a lot of room for error in pet vegan diets, and if they’re not done right, your pet could really suffer. An improperly balanced vegan diet can cause such as inadequate protein intake, amino acid imbalance, and vitamin deficiency.
Other Alternatives
While dogs can live on a vegetarian or vegan diet, most prefer and need animal protein. If you’re uncomfortable with feeding your dog processed kibble, you can always look into raw feeding such as Just Raw Pet Food. Our food has a nutritional mix of animal protein, animal bones and organs, vegetables, and fruit. This diet mimics the natural prey diet that dogs living on for years before domestication and is free from additives and preservatives!
So, is a Vegan Diet Healthy for My Dog?

]]>Are you looking to add a large, loveable furry member to your family? Large dog breeds are some of the most popular and make great family pets. What classifies as a large dog breeds changes depending on who you ask, but they’re typically any breed that is over 50 pounds and is taller than 15 inches at the shoulder.
Picking the right breed for your family and lifestyle will take some research, and there are always non-pure-bred dogs to look at, but here are 10 of the most popular large dog breeds to consider!
Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retrievers have been one of the most popular breeds in Canada and the U.S. for decades. They’re a great breed, known for being friendly, outgoing, and obedient. They’re great family dogs and one of the most sought-after breeds for challenging work, such as guide dogs or search and rescue.
German Shepherds are known for being extremely intelligent, trainable, and obedient. That’s why they’re often selected to be search and rescue and police dogs! They’re also good family dogs, which is why they’re the second most popular dog breed in Canada.
Goldens are the third most popular dog breed in Canada, and these fluffy goofs are a great breed! They’re not only smart but hard-working, which is why they’re commonly employed as guide dogs. They’re an endearing breed known for being playful and patient, making them a great family dog.
Poodles come in three different sizes- standard, miniature, and toy- as well as a variety of colors. They’re a smart breed, known for being energetic and athletic. They do require regular grooming, but they’re popular due to their hypoallergenic coat. They’re also the fourth most popular dog breed in all of Canada!
Rottweilers, commonly called Rotties, are one of the oldest working breeds in the world. They’re a strong and intelligent breed but have unfortunately had some bad PR and been shown as aggressive in media. They have a lot of strength, but they’re actually a very calm and confident breed.
This breed is known for being a gun dog and is a great pet. They need a lot of exercise, and love both land and water. They are one of the best swimming dogs thanks to their webbed feet. This is a good breed for an active family.
Did you know Boxers actually weren’t popular in North America until after World War 2? Soldiers returning from war brought the breed back with them from Europe, and their popularity took off from there. They’re a bright and active breed. They are known to drool, so they may benefit from a raw diet to help control this.
Originally bred as a sled dog, huskies are well-known for their endurance. They have a great work ethic and are very active. They need a lot of exercise and stimulation, especially running. They’re a very loyal and outgoing breed but can be quite mischievous. They’re great for an active family, especially one that loves spending time in the cold!
Australian Shepherds are known for their long, silky coats and stunning eyes. They were originally used as sheep herds in Australia, then became popular with U.S. ranchers. This breed is very smart, but they need a lot of stimulation and activity. If you’re looking for a dog breed to keep up with your active lifestyle, this is it!
Great Danes were originally developed as boar hounds, but today these gentle giants have much less hazardous lives. Though they’re large, they’re extremely friendly and patient. They make great family dogs, but they are very tall and large, so be sure you have high places to keep their treats hidden.
Adding a new pet to your life? Consider putting them on a raw diet, which has tons of benefits, from healthier coats to a better digestive system. At Just Raw, all of our raw meals are made with human-grade meat and don’t have additives or preservatives. We offer delivery and pick up from our new storefront. Contact us with any questions or concerns.

It’s the season of love! Dogs are the perfect Valentine’s Day companion, full of unconditional love, kisses, and cuddles, but this holiday also poses many risks for them. Make sure you’re thinking of their safety as you plan your perfect romantic holiday. Here are a few simple tips to keeping your furry family members safe this Valentine’s Day!
Keep a Close Eye on Chocolate
As most people know, chocolate is toxic to dogs. How dangerous it is can depend on the type of chocolate and size of your pup, but no matter what it’s important to keep them from ingesting it. If your dog gets into your box of chocolates, be sure to keep a close eye on them and contact your vet.
Store the Sweets
It’s not just chocolate that poses a risk to pets. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in many types of candies and baked goods, and it’s also extremely toxic to dogs. Because of this, make sure you store all your sweets, chocolate or not, away from your pets. Keep them for you and your SO!
Watch the Flowers
Flowers may be one of the most romantic and classic Valentine’s Day gestures, but did you know that many common flowers can be deadly if ingested by your cats or dogs? Even a small nibble can be dangerous. Certain flowers, such as roses, also have thorns that can hurt your dog if they bite. So be sure to keep your floral arrangements out of your pet’s reach.
Blow out Candles
Candles are the perfect way to set a romantic ambiance, but open flames present dangers for your pets. If you’re lighting some, make sure you don’t leave them unattended or in a place where your dog could get hurt. All it takes is one tail wag for them to get burnt or knock it over, causing a fire.
Dump out Extra Drinks
It’s not uncommon to celebrate Valentine’s Day with some champagne or wine, but make sure you don’t leave out half-full glasses. Dogs are curious creatures, and some may even take a sip or two. Alcohol is dangerous for dogs, though and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other issues. So be sure to dump out any extra drinks once you’re done, and don’t give your pets any!
Don’t Give the Gift of Puppy Love
Many people think giving a sweet puppy is one of the best Valentine’s Day gifts, but we encourage you to wait. As great as puppy kisses are, animals should never be given as a gift unless everyone in the household has already agreed to accept all the responsibilities that come with them. These living creatures shouldn’t be surprise presents. If you’re unsure what to get your SO, stick to flowers and chocolates and not a dog.

]]>Canadian Eskimo Dog
The Canadian Eskimo Dog, or Canadian Inuit Dog, is thought to be one of the oldest and rarest breeds native to North America. This northern working dog has been a resident of the Arctic for the past 4,000 years. Indigenous Canadians have used them as sledding and carting dogs as well as hunting dogs. Unfortunately, they’re so rare now they’re on the brink of extinction with only 300 purebred left.
Did you know the ultimate family dog and most popular dog breed actually comes from Canada? Yup, Labrador Retrievers hail from Canada. They come from the Newfoundland region and are still incredibly popular and useful today. They’re a great breed for service animals and are known for their obedient and loving temperament.
Newfoundland dogs are great, fluffy beasts that come from Canada. They were initially used as working dogs and excelled as water rescue dogs. Their large bodies and thick coats keep them well protected from the icy cold waters. They’re still used as rescue dogs today but have also found a place as a family companion.
Landseer dogs are actually just a black and white-colored version of Newfoundland’s but are considered a separate breed. These large dogs are docile and were often used to pull nets for fishermen back in the day. Like Newfoundland’s, they’re useful water rescue dogs, and their easy temperament also makes them great for families.
The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, often just called a Toller, is a medium-sized dog used as gundogs. As the name suggests, they originally come from Nova Scotia and are used as duck tolling and retrieving. They’re an active and intelligent breed and make great family pets. They’re the smallest retriever breed and are often mistaken for smaller Golden Retrievers, though they feature white patches on them.
Adding a native Canadian breed to your family? Be sure to look into raw feeding! A balanced raw diet like Just Raw Pet Food has many benefits for your pup. Contact us to learn more.

New year, new options! Just Raw is very excited to announce we have launched a new line of mini combo packages. These smaller combos offer more options for pet owners in the GTA.
Benefits of Just Raw Mini Combos
At Just Raw, we know one of the biggest struggles pet owners face when feeding raw is storage. Raw pet meals have to be kept frozen until it’s time to defrost and feed, which can pose issues for people that don’t have a lot of freezer space.
Our mini combos are the perfect option for people that have limited storage space or have smaller dogs! They’re perfect for pet owners that live downtown in condos. This is a value pack that is both affordable and convenient.
Although these are smaller combos (12 lbs vs. the full-sized 24 lbs), we include a large selection of proteins. Most other smaller combos on the market only offer 2-3 protein options, while our Mini Combos include a selection of 3-5 proteins!
Meet Our Mini Combos
Mini Barn Combo
The Mini Barn Combo is perfect for a rotational meal plan to appease dogs that like a variety. This combo comes with five tasty proteins: Chicken, Beef, Turkey, Duck, and Turducken.
Mini Farm Combo

Mini Just Bird Combo
The Mini Just Bird Combo is perfect for dogs that are all about poultry! It is just like our regular Just Bird combo but half the quantity and includes the following poultry protein options: Chicken, Duck, Turkey, and Turducken.

]]>Although raw diets have many benefits for pets, not all raw food companies are the same. Just Raw Pet Food is a step above the rest, from the quality of meat to customer service. Here are just a few things that set up apart from other raw pet food companies out there.
Easy & Quick Delivery
One of the biggest hurdles preventing pet owners from adopting a raw diet for their dogs is its convenience. At Just Raw, our goal is to make raw feeding as simple and easy as possible for Ontario pet owners. That’s why we offer quick and easy delivery.
We deliver all across the GTA and even offer free delivery on orders over $100. We also work with your schedule so that we can find a time convenient for you. Most of our orders are delivered within 2-3 days after placing, so you’ll never have to worry about long delivery times. And if there are ever any issues with your order, feel free to reach out!
Locally Sourced
At Just Raw Pet Food, we think local small businesses should support each other, which is why we only use meat locally sourced from here in Canada. Our Lake Smelt comes right from Lake Ontario, and our poultry is also sourced from local farms in the province. All of our beef comes from Alberta as well!
By using locally sourced meat, we’re not only supporting local farmers, but it also allows us to have more control and transparency over our product. Transparency and honesty are important to us, which is why we’re proud to say we’re able to trace all of our meat back to the animal.
Whole Bird
We offer a number of poultry options at Just Raw, such as Turkey, Chicken, Duck, and Turducken. What sets our poultry meals apart from others is that we only use Grade A whole poultry to make our food, unlike other raw pet food companies that only use carcasses, which leads to a higher bone content. This makes the texture of the meals meatier and fluffier, providing more protein and a more balanced diet for your pet.
By using whole birds in our meals, as opposed to carcasses or just meat, we’re able to provide a balanced meal for your pet. Raw diets should include a carefully balanced mix of bone, meat, organs, and more.
Meat Quality
Did you know all of our Just Raw meals are made with the highest quality meat? You could munch down with your pet and be perfectly fine! We don’t believe in feeding our pets something we wouldn’t eat, which is why we use only the best protein.
All of our meat is hormone and antibiotic-free. Our poultry is Grade A, and our beef is human-grade! You can feel good about the meals you’ll be providing your dog.
Ready to start seeing the benefits of feeding your pet a quality raw diet? Order today or contact us to learn more!
]]>Tire Them Out
Before the celebrations start, spend that day exercising your dog. Dogs are less likely to freak out if they’re tired and sleepy. Take them for a job, play ball at the park, or just run around the house. A worn-out pup is less likely to stress out, so be sure to give them plenty of exercise leading up to the night time festivities!
Create a Safe Space
Who doesn’t like retreating to a safe space when things become too much? Our dogs are the same. Ensure they have a safe, dark, and quiet space to retreat to when they start to become stressed out. Most dogs prefer a smaller, enclosed space. If your dog is really freaking out, consider waiting it out with them in there. That way, they know both them and you are safe.
Limit Visual Stimulation
Watching fireworks is fun for us, but the bright colors can be a lot for our pets, even with the reduced sound. Try to reduce visual stimulation by keeping the blinds and windows closed. This can help keep your dog calm.
Use Distractions
When in doubt, use distractions! Distract your dog from their stress by playing with their favorite toy or tossing them some of their favorite treats, like Just Raw’s Dehydrated Treats. Be sure to have plenty at the ready! If your dog is distracted, they’ll be less likely to stress out.
Look into Anxiety Wraps
Anxiety wraps or thunder vests have been proven to calm even the most skittish pets. These products wrap around your dog, providing pressure to calm them down. Some of these products have an 85% success rate! You may want to try these out once or twice beforehand as some dogs need a few tries to get used to it.

Start by browsing our products to see which your dog would like best. We also offer combo packages of our Just Raw Meals if you want to test out a few different proteins to see what works best for your pup. You’ll be able to view your cart before ordering, and there is even a section to include special instructions. It’s the same online shopping process as most other stores, so it should be easy to use!

This allows us to work with your schedule to find the time when you’ll be home and available to receive it.
This means you won’t have to worry about missing a delivery, having it sit outside, or your pet going crazy when someone approaches the door. We offer free delivery on all GTA orders over $100 and only charge a $10 flat rate for other deliveries. Just Raw delivers across the GTA, so you don’t have to worry about being outside the delivery window if you’re outside of the downtown core.

]]>It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t risks for pet owners at Christmas time. Christmas trees, decorations, and treats all add to the holiday cheer, but they can also pose a risk for our beloved pets. Here are a few simple tips for keeping your pup safe this Christmas!
Christmas Tree
There’s nothing better than the smell of a fresh Christmas tree. But it’s important to realize that although they look great, they can be troublesome for our pets. The oils in certain trees can be mildly toxic, causing upset stomachs, and the needles can get stuck in your pet’s paws or throat. Be sure to regularly sweep fallen needles and keep a close eye on how your pet interacts with the tree.
Make sure that they don’t confuse the glittering ornaments with a fun new toy as well as these can easily break and harm your pet. If your dog is overly curious about your tree, consider closing it off in a separate room when you can’t watch them.
Dangling Decorations & Lights
There’s something magical about dangling lights during the wintertime. It provides cheer even when the sun sets early. These can be enticing for some pets, though. Make sure any lights are out of reach of your pets and turn them off when leaving your pet unattended. Stop your dog from pulling or chewing on any lights as this could hurt them or your home.
Also, keep an eye out for other dangling decorations such as baubles. Or tinsel. These sparkly decorations could be tempting for your pet, but they could hurt themselves or damage your home trying to play with them. Eating items like tinsel could also cause digestive issues, so keep an eye on them!
Holiday Treats
One of the best parts about Christmas is the food! There are sweet treats everywhere, from cookies to candy canes. Just make sure you’re leaving cookies out for Santa and not your pet! Chocolate and other sweets can be dangerous for dogs, especially young and smaller ones.
Make sure to keep holiday treats away from your pet. Avoid putting them in stockings if they’re reachable, and double-check that there are no food items wrapped under your tree as your dog may sniff them out even when wrapped up.
Seasonal Plants
There’s something so festive about seasonal plants like poinsettias. Be careful, though, as these can be dangerous if ingested by pets. Double-check all plants you bring into the home to see how toxic they are to dogs and keep them away if they are.
Fire Safety
Winter is here, which means snow, ice, and freezing weather. Now is probably the time you’re firing up your fireplace to enjoy the warmth and crackling logs. Be sure to keep an eye on your pets, though. While animals are instinctually afraid of fire, that doesn’t mean a curious pup still can’t get injured. Remember to keep an eye on any candles as well!
Christmas Guests
Santa isn’t the only one that visits for the holidays. It’s not uncommon for people to come together during the holidays. As fun as this may be for you, all the extra people and chaos can be a lot for your pets.
To keep them calm and happy, make sure they have a safe space to retreat to. This should be somewhere away from all the noise. It’s also important to keep their regular routine as much as possible, so try to feed and walk them at the same time, as usual, to avoid them becoming too unsettled.
By following these simple tips, you’ll ensure both you and your dog has an amazing holiday! If you’re looking for something special to gift your furry friend this year, order some of our tasty Just Raw Meals or Dehydrated Treats!
]]>At Just Raw Pet Food, we offer seven tasty protein options for your pets. If you’re looking for a heartier protein, our Just Raw Beef Meal is the perfect option. It’s an excellent protein choice for dogs allergic to poultry or who need more iron in their diets. So, if you want to give your dog a steak dinner, here are a few things you might want to know about our Beef Meals!
Sourced in Canada
At Just Raw, we aim to supply Ontario’s dogs with healthy raw meals locally sourced from here in Canada. All of the beef we use in our Just Raw Beef Meal comes from farms in Alberta. Alberta is known for being cattle country and supplies the best beef in the country. You can ensure your dog is getting high-quality meat in their meals!
High-Quality Meat
We don’t just source any beef. We only use human-grade Alberta beef that comes from HACCP and CFIA certified vendors. This means your pup is getting the best quality meat out there. We believe in transparency as well, which is why we trace the origins of all of the animals we use. You’ll notice how bright and colorful our beef meals are, and that’s all due to the quality meat we use!
Good Fat Ratio
Eating too much beef or red meat can be unhealthy, which is why we only use lean muscle meat in our raw meals. All of the beef has fat content of less than 10%. This means you can feed your dog’s Just Raw Beef meals and not have to worry too much about their weight or health.
Balanced Diet
You’ll notice in all of our raw meals, we include a number of fruits and vegetables in addition to the protein. These provide your dogs with additional nutritional benefits that they need. In our Just Raw Beef Meal, we include lean beef muscle meats, finely ground bones, beef liver, beef kidney, beef heart, carrots, spinach, parsley, apples, and blueberries.
Pre-Packaged
Many people have the misconception that raw feeding is difficult. It doesn’t have to be, which is why at Just Raw, we aim to make it as easy as possible. That’s why our Just Raw Beef meal comes pre-packed in 1lb and 2lb containers. This makes it easy to store, prep, and measure the proper proportions to feed your pet.
Doorstep Delivery
In order to make raw feeding as simple as possible, at Just Raw, we offer doorstep delivery! This means that you don’t have to worry about running out and carting the product home. We do all of that for you. We also plan deliveries around your schedule so that we can drop them off at a time when you’re home. Most orders are delivered within 2-3 days after being placed, so you won’t even have to wait long!

]]>The weather is getting cooler, and as the temperature drops, you may notice your dog scratching and itching more. Both humans and canines tend to suffer from dry skin in the wintertime, but not all pet owners know how to treat it. Here are a few ways to prevent and treat your dog’s dry skin.
Feed a Raw Diet
A raw diet has tons of benefits for dogs, from a better digestive system to increased fitness. Another huge advantage is a shinier coat and healthier skin. The natural oils in the raw protein will give your dog a softer and silkier coat. Traditional kibble is also often full of preservatives and additives, which can cause food and skin allergies, which will only be aggravated by the cooler weather.
Bathe Them
Bathing your dog when they have dry skin can help them if done correctly. Be sure to use a shampoo that helps moisturize and relieve itching skin, like an oatmeal shampoo. The wrong shampoo can strip your dog of its natural oils, so be sure you’re using the right one. Also, be sure to use warm water, as hot water can also aggravate the dryness.
Brush Them Daily
Not all dogs enjoy being brushed, but if they suffer from dry, itchy skin, you should try to brush them out daily. Brushing them will help remove dead skin and distribute inflammatory cells that congregate on the itchy skin. It will also prevent mats or knots from forming, which can also cause issues.
Give Them Oils
Consider adding oils to your dog’s diet or bathing routine. Extra oils such as fish oil, coconut oil, and olive oil are a great moisturizer for your dog. Just add a teaspoon to their food! If you’re concerned, run it by your vet first. These oils also have extra nutritional benefits, so it’s a win-win!
Use Vitamin E
Sometimes dogs need extra supplements and vitamins as well. Vitamin E is a great vitamin to include in your dog’s life. It acts as an antioxidant and will moisturize the coat. You can even buy the capsules labeled for humans and gently rub them into your dog’s dry skin. If they lick it off, don’t worry, as it’s great for their heart and liver!

Pros of a Winter Puppy
Perfect Holiday Gift
Adding a puppy to a family, no matter what time of year, is the perfect gift to yourself. Puppies are adorable, sweet, and will be sure to bring a smile to your face. They really are the perfect holiday present from Santa Paws! Whether you have kids or not, a puppy will be a holiday gift you’ll remember for years.
Time Off
The good thing about the holidays is that people usually have more time off of work. Especially this year with limited traveling, people have more time to spend at home this holiday season to train a puppy. Getting a dog around the holidays means you’ll have time at home to invest in potty and obedience training.
Limited Exercise Needed
People often overestimate how much outdoor exercise young puppies need. Long walks are a distant dream when dogs are young, and puppies really only need 5 to 10 minutes of leash training. Young dogs also don’t need as much exercise, so they will probably do fine running around inside, meaning you won’t have to brave the icy outdoors for the first few weeks.
Cons of Winter Puppies
Lifetime Commitment
There’s actually a huge influx in animal shelters after the holidays because people make the mistake of getting a dog because it’s a “cute gift” but aren’t ready to really accept the responsibility. It’s important for all dog owners to be fully ready to take on the responsibility of raising and taking care of a dog before bringing one home. A dog is a commitment for their entire life, not just until the New Year rolls around.
Cold Weather
While young puppies won’t need to spend a ton of time outdoors, you’ll still be taking a lot of trips outside. A puppy running through the snow is adorable but being the one standing there in the freezing cold is a lot less fun. Get ready to get bundled up multiple times a day for bathroom breaks if you get a winter puppy.
Socialization and Vet Limitations
Puppies need to be socialized, but that can be a bit harder in the winter months when everyone is just trying to spend as little time outside as possible. You’ll have to look into indoor play places or training classes to ensure your pup is getting the socialization you need. Getting a dog around the holidays also means you may face limitations for vet trips since they also usually have the holidays off. Just be sure to plan ahead!
Adding a dog to your family this winter? Consider feeding them a raw diet! Just Raw Pet Food has tons of benefits for dogs and is perfectly safe for puppies. Contact us to learn more or order now.
]]>Picking the right breed for your family and lifestyle may take a bit of research, and don’t forget to consider adopting a mutt, but here are ten of the most popular small dog breeds to consider.
French Bulldogs
It shouldn’t be surprising that French Bulldogs are one of the most popular small dog breeds. They’ve been big ever since 1850 where they became fashionable in Parisian society. Even today they’re one of the most popular dog breeds in Canada overall. These dogs are super affectionate, don’t bark much, and don’t require a ton of exercise. They’re a great family dog, but they can be quite pricey and may have some breathing problems.
Beagles fit the whole “man’s best friend” image well. They’re cute, hardy, and loyal. They’ve been a popular breed in Canada forever, and are a great family dog. They’re athletic and have some soulful eyes. They were originally bred for hunting and trained as pack animals, so they’re great for families and get along well with other dogs, but they will require some exercise.
Who doesn’t find a fluffy little poodle adorable? Mini poodles are the perfect apartment dog. They’re easy to train, loyal, obedient, and social. Their curly single layer fur also makes them hypoallergenic. This makes them a great option if you have any fur or dog allergies in the family but still want a pup.
If you’re not afraid of a high energy dog, then you should consider a Yorkshire terrier. These little dogs are bundles of energy that love being around people. They love playing and attention but are very adaptable as well. They can be prone to barking so be ready to train them and spend time on them!
It’s almost impossible to look at a wiener dog and not smile. Between the long sausage bodies and little legs, this is definitely one of the most unique small dog breeds. They’re extremely smart and loyal to their owners and have the attitude of a bigger dog. They’re extremely snuggly so get ready for cuddles.
Corgis are a fan favorite and it's easy to see why. They’ve been a favorite of the British Royal family for years and have taken off in popularity for years. They’re a smart breed and more robust than people initially think. They love being a part of a pack which makes them great family dogs. They have an easy disposition and don’t let those little legs fool you, they’re fast!
There are actually three different breeds of schnauzers, with miniatures being the smallest and most popular. This breed has big personalities and are outgoing and active. They’re great watch dogs, but you’ll have to give them plenty of attention and exercise.
These dogs are so beautiful it hurts! This lap dog breed is not only stunning, but extremely friendly. They love attention and don’t do well with too much alone time, but they’re pretty easy to please and train. As long as they get plenty of affection and play time they’re happy.
Between their cute curls and stylish facial hair it’s easy to see why this breed has been one of the most popular small dogs for a long time. Originally bred in China to resemble a lion, they have since gained international appeal. They’re hypoallergenic, and rarely weigh more than 16 pounds.
Boston Terriers are such softies. They’re super friendly and easy to train. They do have a lot of energy though, so they’ll require some exercise. They come in a few different colors, but the black and white combo is the most popular, hence their nickname of “American Gentleman”.
Whichever breed you decide is right for you, consider feeding them a raw diet! A well-balanced raw diet like you get with Just Raw Pet Food has many benefits from a healthier digestive system to a shiner coat. Contact us to learn more.

When we started Just Raw Pet Food, we found one of the biggest hurdles stopping people from embracing a raw diet was its perceived difficulty. Pet owners want to feed their dogs balanced, fresh meals, but not all of them have the time or means to do so. That’s why our goal at Just Raw Pet Food is to make raw feed as easy as possible, which is why we prioritize our delivery service. We deliver across the Greater Toronto Area, and here is a complete list of our delivery areas.
