5 Dog Breeds That are From Canada

It’s no secret that Canadian’s love our dogs. What is surprising is that out of all of the recognized dog breeds in the world, only five of them originate from Canada! That said, Canada is actually home to some of the most popular dog breeds, so let’s take a look at the dogs that originate from the Great North.

Canadian Eskimo Dog

The Canadian Eskimo Dog, or Canadian Inuit Dog, is thought to be one of the oldest and rarest breeds native to North America. This northern working dog has been a resident of the Arctic for the past 4,000 years. Indigenous Canadians have used them as sledding and carting dogs as well as hunting dogs. Unfortunately, they’re so rare now they’re on the brink of extinction with only 300 purebred left.

Labrador Retriever

Did you know the ultimate family dog and most popular dog breed actually comes from Canada? Yup, Labrador Retrievers hail from Canada. They come from the Newfoundland region and are still incredibly popular and useful today. They’re a great breed for service animals and are known for their obedient and loving temperament.

Newfoundland

Newfoundland dogs are great, fluffy beasts that come from Canada. They were initially used as working dogs and excelled as water rescue dogs. Their large bodies and thick coats keep them well protected from the icy cold waters. They’re still used as rescue dogs today but have also found a place as a family companion.

Landseer

Landseer dogs are actually just a black and white-colored version of Newfoundland’s but are considered a separate breed. These large dogs are docile and were often used to pull nets for fishermen back in the day. Like Newfoundland’s, they’re useful water rescue dogs, and their easy temperament also makes them great for families.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, often just called a Toller, is a medium-sized dog used as gundogs. As the name suggests, they originally come from Nova Scotia and are used as duck tolling and retrieving. They’re an active and intelligent breed and make great family pets. They’re the smallest retriever breed and are often mistaken for smaller Golden Retrievers, though they feature white patches on them.
