5 Helpful Tips for Naming Your Dog

5 Helpful Tips for Naming Your Dog

Getting a new dog is exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. It’s a huge responsibility, and one of the first pet-parenting decisions you’ll have to make is what to name them. Picking the perfect dog name isn’t always easy, though. Here are a few tips to help you find the perfect name.

Keep it Short

Ever notice how the bulk of dog training commands are one or two syllables? That’s because they’re the easiest for dogs to understand. That same logic can be applied to names. Stick to names that are one to two syllables. Longer names can get lost in translation, and you’ll probably end up calling them by a shorter nickname anyways.

Avoid Names Similar to Commands

Dogs have great hearing, but they can sometimes mistake words if they sound too similar. That’s why you should avoid naming your pet something that could sound like a command word. For example, “Mo” can be confused with “no,” “Fay” can be confused with “stay,” and “Kit” can be confused with “sit.”

Make Sure It’s Appropriate

You can technically name your pet anything you want, but remember that you’ll be using it in public at some point in time, whether it’s calling after them in the dog park or making a vet appointment. Avoid controversial or offensive names. If you wouldn’t feel comfortable yelling it in a crowded room, it’s probably not a good name for your pet.

Look at Breed History

If you’re stuck on a name, consider looking into the breed’s history for some inspiration. Adopting a Corgi? Consider a Welsh name! Bringing home a Labrador Retriever puppy? Why not bust out a classic Canadian name.

Be Original

Just as with kid’s names, some dog names are more popular than others. There are tons of pups names Cooper and Luna out there. While there’s nothing wrong with naming your dog something common, this could cause issues if you frequent dog parks or use dog sitting services. Why not look for something more original!
