Raw Dog Food Feeding Instructions
A raw diet for dogs has many benefits, from a shinier coat to a healthier digestive system. However, many dog owners are only used to feeding their dogs traditional kibble. If you’re unsure how to properly feed your dog a raw diet, here are a few tips that you should follow!
Preparing Raw Dog Food
An advantage of kibble is that it required minimal effort when it comes to feeding. Owners simply need to scoop the correct amount into a bowl. Switching to a raw diet takes a bit more effort, but it’s still very easy!
Step 1: Storage
To keep raw dog food fresh, it is recommended that you store it in the freezer until it’s ready to be used. Just Raw Pet Food pre-packages all dinners into 1-lb and 2-lbs portions. This makes it super easy for owners to store their pet’s tasty meals.
Step 2: Thaw
Once you’re ready, take out your pet’s meal from the freezer so that it can thaw. We recommend you allow 2 days for the meals to fully thaw. Remember to thaw meals in the refrigerator. This takes a bit of foresight, but once you’re used to a raw diet it becomes very easy to remember when to take out new portions to thaw!
Step 3: Feeding
Once your pup’s meal is fully thawed it’s time for feeding! Feed an appropriate portion to your dog, preferably in a separate bowl. We recommend a stainless steel bowl as it can easily be cleaned. Remove any unconsumed food (if there is any!) within 20 minutes.
Step 4: Cleaning
It’s important to clean your dog’s bowl after each meal, which is why we recommend using a bowl that can easily be sanitized. Wash your hands and your dog’s bowl with warm soapy water after each feeding. This will prevent your dog from getting ill!
Portioning Raw Dog Food
No matter what method you choose to feed your dog, it’s important that you feed them the correct amount. Dogs need enough food to meet all of their nutritional needs. Weight and size play a big role in determining how much to feed your pup.
For Just Raw Pet Food meals, it is recommended that you feed 2%-3% of the adult body weight. For example, if your dog is 50 lbs, it is recommended you feed your dog 1 lb of raw dog food.
Be sure to keep a close eye on your dog’s weight for the first few months after switching to a raw dog food diet. You may need to increase or decrease the amount of food based on how they are doing. We also recommend you discuss feeding portions with your vet if you have any concerns. While we recommend 2-3% of your pets’ weight, all dogs digest food differently so it is important that you adjust accordingly.
